Ocean waste management project targets to maintain marine resource abundance, by encouraging the coastal communities to manage their household and fishery waste, by establishing a pilot community as a model community for waste segregation, reduction, and waste reuse and recycling. Variety of waste management activities were organized to raise community’s awareness in waste management, including the installation of booms in canals; awareness raising in marine resource conservation through the beach and ocean waste collecting activities participated by both volunteering staff and communities, support and take part in the awareness campaigns on special events, such as World Oceans Day and the International Coastal Clean Up Day, as well as the building of community networks and marine youth conservationists. The activities were carried out in 9 provinces around the Gulf of Thailand namely Songkhla, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani, Surat Thani, Chumphon, Samut Songkhram, Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan and Rayong, and in Malaysia. In 2021, 195 community members have participated in the 53 waste management activities, organized by the empowered community working committee, being able to manage the activities efficiently with lively planning, organizing, budgeting and accounting, whilst gaining more community members participations in the monthly activities, raised community’s awareness in environmental conservation responsibility and widely cooperation among community members in waste sorting, reduction, reuse and recycling. In 2021, the project reduced over 64 tonnes of beach and ocean waste, returned cleaned and beautiful beach and scenery, decrease negative health impacts, and raised community income through the ocean waste-based products innovation such as floor and wall tiles, plant pots to be used in the project areas and sell in local markets PTTEP has carried out analysis on Social Return on Investment (SROI) of this project by measuring the social impact of the program with the financial quantification calculation (monetization). This method is intended to measure the value of the financial impact of the program that compares to the value of the impact to the cost of the program that has been invested into. It appears that the value of the SROI ratio is 4.22:1 PTTEP has carried out analysis on Social Return on Investment (SROI) of this project by measuring the social impact of the program with the financial quantification calculation (monetization).
